Hotel brand Hintercompany just unveiled a new rental retreat that’s tucked into the wilderness in La Conception, Quebec. Located just 15 minutes from the Mont-Tremblant Ski Resort, the Hinterhouse is a tranquil prefab designed to help travelers relax and recharge.

Clad in 2.5-inch custom-milled white cedar, the house blends into its surroundings.

"Their intention is to create beautiful spaces to rent that are hidden in the woods and help people escape from the hustle and bustle of the city to reconnect with nature," says David Dworkind, cofounder of Ménard Dworkind Architecture & Design, the Montréal-based firm that designed the sleek cabin.

Shutters that mimic the cedar siding can close off the expansive glazing, which encompasses 60% of the dwelling.

Hinterhouse is cloistered in the woods, but it’s also easily accessible as the Mont-Tremblant Ski Resort is just a 15-minute drive down the road.

Drawing inspiration from Scandinavian minimalism and Japanese design, the two-bedroom, one-bath cabin embraces an open-concept floor plan. The main living space is framed by floor-to-ceiling windows and is centered around a rotating wood stove that provides 360-degree access to the fire.

To create a connection to the great outdoors, Ménard Dworkind Architecture & Design incorporated organic materials, natural hues, and expansive glass throughout the cozy, 1,000-square-foot dwelling. 

The maple farmhouse table doubles as a kitchen island. The custom sink can be used as a perch for the cutting board, and a small tabletop garden provides herbs for cooking.

"A large part of the budget was dedicated to glass on this project," Dworkind says. "It was important for us to prioritize transparency. The inside was kept minimal to let the ever-changing landscape become the focal point of every room."

Concrete stretches across the bathroom floor into the shower, where a floor-to-ceiling window frames the great outdoors. A simple palette of concrete, plywood, and keystone white mosaic tile gives the bathroom a clean look.

Rotary-cut fir plywood is given a Varathane ebony wood stain to create contrast. Both bedrooms fit a wall-to-wall queen bed, and a sliding panel reveals a hidden TV at the foot of each bunk.

Sixty percent of the Hinterhouse is clad in glass, and the rest of the exterior is wrapped in 2.5-inch custom-milled white cedar, allowing the house to blend into the surrounding forest. Sliding shutters that mimic the cabin’s white cedar siding allow the house to be closed off to the elements or opened up to nature.

Down the hill from the main house, a tiny structure houses a sauna.

The sauna offers a "Scandinavian spa circuit of hot, cold, relax" with a shower and hammocks.

From the house, a staircase leads down the hillside to a 70-square-foot sauna that echoes the design of the main cabin. Attached to the sauna is a 70-square-foot deck with a cold outdoor shower and two hammocks that "complete the Scandinavian spa circuit of hot, cold, relax," according to Dworkind.

Although the Hinterhouse was constructed on-site, the 16-foot-wide dwelling is designed to be prefabricated and assembled off-site, and then delivered to its final location.
